Bruno Lijoi Obituary

Bruno Lijoi was born in Calabria, Italy on November 9th, 1918. He came to the U.S. at 7 years old. Bruno learned English and excelled in grammar school. Bruno attended Brooklyn Tech High School and graduated in 1938. He then worked as a Draftsman for Parker-Kaylin. In 1941, Bruno joined the Army. He fought in World War II in the Pacific including the Battle of Peleliu. Bruno became a Captain and often recalls his time served. He is part of the Greatest Generation who fought for our freedoms that we hold dear today. In 1946, Bruno married Connie and moved to Long Island in 1952. He had two daughters – Barbara and Adrienne – who were raised in Farmingdale. Bruno worked for Arma and Grumman and is still in his original house in Farmingdale. He has four grandsons, two great granddaughters, and a great grandson. Connie passed away in 1991. In 1993, Bruno reconnected with Mary, who he first met at Parker-Kaylin in 1938. In fact, at the end of 1938, Bruno and Mary rang in 1939 together in Times Square. Mary was widowed also, and after they both lived full lives, Bruno and Mary came back together and were married in 1993. After getting married in their 70s they have now been married for 25 years! In 2018, Captain Bruno Lijoi was honored at Citi Field as the New York Mets Veteran of the Game. He was also proud to ride one of the cars in the Farmingdale Memorial Day Parade in May. Bruno turned 100 on November 9th, 2018. He passed away on Wednesday, December 19th, 2018. He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughters Barbara Biscuiti and Adrienne Hjelm, his grandchildren Matthew, Christopher, Eric, and Gregory, and his great grandchildren Lena, Charlotte, and Brayden. Visitation will take place Friday, December 21st from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Arthur F. White Funeral Home Inc., Farmingdale. Funeral Mass Saturday, December 22nd, 9:15 am at St. James RC Church.
